Crystal Stewart has been a midwife at Baby and Company since 2018. Her first experience in health care was working in a nursing home through her teenage years, and then at in the labor and delivery ward of a public hospital as part of a high school semester abroad in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. “I assisted women in labor and delivery through desperate and impoverished conditions and knew this was my calling. I proceeded to pursue pre-med studies, but discovered midwifery in the process and was drawn to the intimacy and philosophy of care that midwifery offers.”
Crystal went on to become a registered nurse and work for years in the emergency department, hospital labor and delivery unit, and at Holy Family Birth Center in Weslaco Texas, the oldest birth center in Texas, well known for humanitarian border work and contributions to the nurse-midwifery community. Crystal, who is fluent in Spanish, was drawn to caring for women in a special and individualized way and was inspired by the many midwives who gave of themselves, volunteering to provide this care. “It was a model of being ‘with women’ and ‘for women.’ The only way to describe this experience is love.”
After a obtaining her Master of Science degree in Nurse-Midwifery at Frontier Nursing University, Crystal began helped establish one of the first hospital-based midwifery practices in the McAllen-Edinburg, TX region. She saw great strides in hospital culture and normalizing of evidence-based practices like skin-to-skin contact after birth, delayed cord clamping, and family centered care. Crystal is delighted to be at Baby and Company, where she can continue to be “with women” as a nurse-midwife in the birth center and hospital settings.
When not working, Crystal most enjoys spending time in nature, going on adventures with her husband and 5 children; Ella, Emma, Elina, Christian and Christopher, and being active in her church community.
