I sat on the heated bidet between my contractions. It was amazing. It helped the baby drop down through the birth canal, and there was a railing so that I could hold on. I definitely want a bidet in my house now!
A Christmas Baby: Rylan's Birth Story
Second-time mother Mary was hoping she wouldn’t have her baby on Christmas Day. After all, with a name like Mary, it would be too much of a cliché to have her baby on December 25th! But despite her hopes, little Rylan chose to make his appearance at 8:44 on Christmas morning, weighing in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches long. Even though it was a holiday, Mary was thrilled that she (and the midwives and support team) still managed to get home in time for Christmas dinner. Here’s the story of her big day:
“My three-year-old daughter, Kamdyn, was born at the hospital after I had an epidural. I wanted something a bit different for my second baby, and even before I was pregnant I had my heart set on Baby+Company. My mom had seen it on the news, and within fifteen minutes of looking at the website, I knew this was where I wanted to have my next baby. I got an appointment with them in December, they removed my birth control and advised me on prenatal vitamins, and by March I was expecting. They were truly there with me from the very beginning to the end of this pregnancy journey.
The day before Rylan was born, I was hoping things would start moving along because I had been losing my mucus plug. I also had back labor – it was uncomfortable but inconsistent. That night, we went to visit my father-in-law in the hospital. I started having contractions while I was there, but they weren’t regular. I called Baby+Company anyway, and the midwife told me to meet her at the center in an hour so she could check me.
At eleven at night on Christmas Eve, my midwife checked me and at first thought that I might be able to come back tomorrow to have the baby. When she checked me again, though, she found that I was leaking amniotic fluid and I was 100% effaced. I wasn’t going anywhere!
My mother-in-law came to stay with Kamdyn. I had tested positive for Group B strep, so I got started on the medication. I called my doula, and she arrived right away. Everyone was surprised because I was so quiet during the whole labor. I just hummed my way through every contraction. My doula reminded me to go limp and not tense up – just to let my energy dissolve into the bed.
I sat on the heated bidet between my contractions. It was amazing. It helped the baby drop down through the birth canal, and there was a railing so that I could hold on. I definitely want a bidet in my house now! I was getting ready to take a rest before the baby came, but two minutes after I got into the bed, I needed to push. The pressure hit me like a train. I asked them to fill the tub, but once I got in I realized it was too slippery for me to really get leverage.
I took two steps toward the bed and was standing at the foot of it when I stopped in my tracks. The midwife tried to get me to the head of the bed, but I wasn’t going anywhere. I started pushing and within eight minutes, Rylan was born! It was a perfect birth. The midwife, assistant, and doula didn’t have to give me any instructions about when to start or stop pushing. It all happened naturally. The three of them and my husband were my ‘fabulous four’ support group in the room. I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of them.
I love the intimacy and privacy of the birth center. It’s almost a surreal feeling. When I look at my birth video I can see what an intimate moment it was. I didn’t have a birth plan at all, but every stone was uncovered. My husband was by my side, and I gave birth naturally, just like women have been doing for hundreds of years. I didn’t have any medication, and I didn’t even tear, although Rylan was bigger than my daughter. The difference between the hospital birth and the birth center experience was huge.
The people at the birth center were incredible. I felt really connected to all of the midwives. I know they build relationships with every mom differently, but there wasn’t a single person there who I didn’t connect with in some way. Each and every one of them played an important role in my prenatal care and birth. They all had good advice. Even the staff at the front desk was amazing. I was in and out, and I didn’t have to wait hours to be seen. I related to every person working there. If I ever have another baby, I would head straight for Baby+Company.”
