Meet the Baby + Co. Family Member: Ashley Couse, Health Coach

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Nashville?

I was born and raised in the Midwest, Ohio to be specific, but we’ve lived in Nashville for 12 years and it’s beginning to feel more and more like home.

How long have you worked at Baby and Company?

I believe I was the second hire at Baby+Co back in 2015. Margaret, our clinical director, lovingly roped me into being one of the center managers when I thought I was interviewing for a part-time front desk position. I’m so happy I said yes and started working out of my home and giving “tours” of the birth center from an interior design studio while the good ol’ Outback Steakhouse was being renovated into the birth center as it stands today. After the birth of my daughter in 2017, I moved into the health coaching and childbirth education role. It’s basically my dream job.

What’s a health coach do?

A health coach is someone who helps you realize your own health goals and aids you in implementing approachable ways to achieve those goals. Health coaching isn’t about dieting or a one-size-fits-all approach, but we really take the time to get to know an individual and help them discover what fuels them best. We take into consideration things like sleep, stress management, diet, and exercise—really looking at health from a holistic perspective. My main role in health coaching at Baby and Company is two-fold: helping women build healthy foundations for conception and pregnancy + supporting women to make healthy choices in pregnancy in hopes of preventing and/or managing pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes or hypertension.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

That’s a hard one because really I love everything about my role at Baby and Company. If I had to say, I think my favorite part of both health coaching and educating is connecting and building relationships with clients while getting to watch them learn, grow, and make positive changes. I love it when a preconception coaching client sends me a message letting me know they’re pregnant or when a student from my birth class sees me after their baby is born and stops to let me know my teaching made a difference and they felt prepared, at peace, and empowered for their birth.

Are you a hunter or a gatherer?

Hunter—I’m all about taking life by the reins and making things happen!

If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs such as food and water were taken care of, what two items (not people) would you want to have with you?

An iPod loaded with my favorite tunes and a hammock. C’est la vie.

What’s your superpower?

Replicating delicious dishes I’ve had out at restaurants back at home!
