Kate Layman. CNM.
Kate grew up listening to stories about nursing from the women in her family. She particularly found inspiration in the tales about her Aunt Cathy, working with midwives in the Philippines and on Indian reservations in the Western U.S. After high school graduation, she traveled to Eastern Kentucky to learn more about the history and education of midwives in America.
She earned her B.S.N. in Nursing from Florida State University. For the next seven years she traveled the country working in various fields of Nursing from Orthopedic Trauma to Public Health. It wasn’t until she found her way back to Midwifery in a small birth center on the Tex-Mex border, that she knew it was time to finally realize her dream.
Graduate school was back in Florida, this time at The University of Florida. Her first job as a midwife brought her to the Chapel Hill area, then marriage and family. She now resides in Durham with her husband and young daughters.
When she is not having fun with her baby+co. family, she enjoys trying new recipes, collecting stamps in her passport, and seeing the world through a toddler’s eyes. Kate is ecstatic to participate in the growing birth center community and all it has to offer to both families and midwives!
